Philosophy

My Philosophy:
I believe that everyone has the right to learn to play an instrument no matter the age, gender, race, economic circumstance, natural talent, or physical handicap. I'm willing to work with anyone who is serious enough to put the time and effort in that are necessary when learning an instrument.  If you would love flute lessons but can't handle the financial commitment I am willing to work with you so please feel free to call or e-mail.  I also believe that private lessons should be a fun and rewarding experience! I'm not here to entertain you, but I am here to provide you with all the tools necessary to learn to have fun and have success playing an instrument, as well as teaching things like fingerings, reading music, posture, and correct embouchure/breathing. I also require my students to learn the theory and history of music as well as listening/music appreciation skills so they can have a well-rounded view of all music and be successful wherever they go. I believe that performing is very important to a musician's growth and each student will be required to perform at least once a semester at our studio recital (if this is scary or intimidating, don't worry, it is a fun, relaxed, learning experience for everyone and I can help you as much as you need). I also believe that ensemble playing, as well as solo playing, is vitally important to succeeding on any instrument. In an ensemble you learn how to listen to others, blend, tune, maintain a correct tempo/key signature, etc. That is why I devote a little time to every lesson for duets and why I hold a group class every other week where all my students will learn to play with each other in a flute choir setting. Group classes are super fun and involve music games, flute choir practice, and they always end with a little treat! They are also a great way to get to know other flutists and make friends.
